Erin Hupp x Goldstories: The Story Behind The Fold Collection

What begins as clay can become so much more. That is the beauty of Erin Hupp’s work, and the spark that led to our collaboration on The Fold Collection.

From Plate to Jewelry: The Journey of the Fold

The Fold first came to life in Erin’s Oakland studio as a hand-thrown ceramic plate. It started as the textured top of her two-piece caviar server, one of the longest-standing pieces in her collection. Its sculptural form soon caught the attention of chefs and found its way into fine dining, including a commission from Chef Alex Hong for his Michelin-starred restaurant, Sorrel, in San Francisco.

But the Fold’s journey did not stop at the table. Erin reimagined it as a Portal Mirror for an installation at 7x7 Gallery, where its bold shape captivated viewers, including Subikksha, founder of Goldstories. Inspired by its potential beyond ceramics, she envisioned the form in gold, a moment of connection that blossomed into a collaboration.

Now, the Fold takes new life as a collection of fine jewelry. Earrings, necklaces, and rings merge Erin’s sculptural aesthetic with Goldstories’ craftsmanship. The result is a fluid meeting of mediums: art you can wear, carrying the soul of ceramics into the permanence of metal. As Subikksha shares,

“When I first saw Erin’s Fold, I immediately imagined it as a ring. It felt like the form was destined to live beyond clay.”

Who is Erin Hupp?

Erin Hupp (she/her) is more than a ceramic artist. She is a collaborator, a storyteller, and a master of her medium. Based in Oakland, CA, Erin creates bespoke, hand-thrown tableware and art objects for fine dining restaurants and thoughtfully designed interiors. Her work is featured at acclaimed establishments such as Californios, Nightbird, Sons & Daughters, Pasta Bar, Acquerello, Sorrel, and Stanly Ranch Auberge Resort.

With over 20 years of experience, Erin’s journey is as layered as her ceramics. She has been a pottery teacher, production potter, studio manager, and artist-in-residence. Before embracing ceramics full-time, she studied law and urban planning, even bartending at a jazz club along the way. Her background in both structure and improvisation informs her work, pieces that balance discipline with fluidity, precision with organic movement.

Reflecting on her creative process, Erin says,

“Clay teaches me patience, humility, and the beauty of imperfection. Each piece carries that lesson into the hands of others.”

Why We Chose Erin

At Goldstories, every collaboration begins with a story. Erin’s Fold plate embodies everything we value: heritage, form, and transformation. What struck Subikksha most was Erin’s ability to take something as grounded as clay and elevate it into timeless design. The Fold Collection represents not only the fusion of two mediums, but also a meeting of two traditions, Erin’s sculptural ceramics and Goldstories’ fine jewelry craftsmanship.

Together, we have reimagined the Fold into jewelry that feels fluid, bold, and enduring, a collection that speaks to both the beauty of ceramics and the intimacy of adornment.

The Fold Collection

Each piece in the collection is handcrafted in California in solid 14k gold and sterling silver. Designed to echo the folds of clay, the jewelry honors its origins while standing on its own as wearable sculpture.

With The Fold Collection, we celebrate what happens when two crafts meet: ceramics and fine jewelry, art and adornment, clay and gold.
